The Rental by Rebecca Berto
(The Rental #1)
Publication date: September 22nd 2014
Genres: Adult, Erotica, Romance

Synopsis:
At first, Rick Delaney watched Vee Wyland with the hungry eyes of a fox as if she were a rabbit … his rabbit. But one day, he slunk away without notice.

Months away from graduating high school, Vee’s life is on the verge of crumbling. At home, dire finances and long hours test her family. Her boyfriend hardly pays attention to her. And she can’t shake her feelings for his older brother, Rick.

Then, all in one night, tragedy tears her teetering life into shreds.

When Rick and Vee reunite, the sparks fly. However, she unwittingly signs away a future for both of them. In his world, a place called The Rental, she becomes Victoria and Rick becomes Rhett. One part of her watches with fascination, while the other unfurls and embraces her sexual awakening. It began as a game, but the consequences are real.

Following their heart’s desire is forbidden, but walking away could strip their hope for a future.

The Rental is an erotic romance that explores how sex isn’t purely physical; sometimes, it’s a gateway to your soul.

PAM'S REVIEW

3 stars
"My heart belongs to you...and it's a gift no one can buy, borrow or steal."

Vee has learned early on what it's like to love and to lose the ones you love. After that dreadful night when everything was taken away from her, she lives her life in a daze. Going through the motions, dabbling in some stuff to help her get by. But then one day, her past comes back into her life, wakes her up and leads her to a new opportunity...no matter how much he tries to keep her away.
Being held by him was everything. It was the high when I smoked something I shouldn't have, the come-down when the happiness wore away, and the dreams for more of it every night as long as I could foresee.

Rick has enough on his plate to worry about and now he has to add Vee and her desire to let loose her alter ego. That day Victoria was born and in secrecy she gets to live out her fantasy with Rhett a.k.a. Rick...even if it's forbidden. They wish they could be free and not sneak around in secrecy, but too much is at stake. The Rental . 'professional, polite, and passionate company.' A place to be able to make money, explore your fantasies and give into your desires.
I had nothing to lose and everything to possibly gain.

The Rental is a means to an end, for them both... they were warned not to get caught up in the lifestyle, making them careless. They know the risk they are taking but they can't help the fire burning in them. Vee's relationship with her mom is falling apart, Rick is fighting his own family battle, is what they have worth it all and is it strong enough to survive? They realize soon they can't have their cake and eat it too.

The Rental was just an okay read for me, it is a steamy sensually erotic read that had a lot going on. I didn't really connect with the characters enough to understand their choices or their decisions, causing my own reading experience to not be so great. They had so much responsibilities and obligations it was so easy for them to get caught up in The Rental.

The booked picked up for me when they reconnected, it almost became something new, the characters were awakened emotionally and physically. It's a different concept for me, which is good in the sense because I can't compare it to anything but bad in a way that I didn't understand it completely. Regardless, my opinion had nothing to do with the writer's style, it was how the book made me feel in the end. I welcome to give it a try and see, you never know you may enjoy it more than I did!
