With Emerald Eyes, author N. Michaels has created an intense, fast-paced, wonderful and heartbreaking debut novel and a smashing start to a new contemporary romance series that I would highly recommend giving a try. To be honest, it took a little time for me to get into the story but once I passed the 20% mark the story kept me glued to the pages until the very end.
Katherine Slavsky has been primed her entire life to follow into the footsteps of het successful father and become a neurosurgeon. But when Katherine decides once and for all that becoming a doctor isn't how she sees her future, her parents pretty much disown her and force her to find a job to fend for herself. And that's how she ends up working for Mr. Eric Miller, her new enigmatic, successful and irresistibly handsome boss.
"I've always been in control of my desires. Always got what I wanted from any man, until he came along;"
And maybe that was kind of the problem. Katherine is used to being the centre of attention, or more specifically the centre of every man's attention she meets. At first, that seemed to make her a bit arrogant and maybe even a little full of herself, but honestly, Katherine was a very likeable heroine. She tries to act like she's so sure of herself but deep inside she's vulnerable and just looking for someone to want and accept her the way she is. She doesn't expect to fall for Eric but his hot as sin looks sure make it hard to stay away from him.
"I'm sure God was pouting a lot of, 'Gorgeous', 'Sensual', 'Mesmerizing' and 'Sex God' into Eric's mix."
And Eric Miller... whew! He constantly went from hot to cold. During the first half of the book I couldn't put my finger on him. One minute he was flirting with Katherine and practically undressing her with his eyes, the next he was chastising her for being too seductive in front of clients and for mixing business with pleasure. See, he has one golden rule: his business and personal life need to be completely separated. So, even though Katherine wants him and she knows he want her too, she's also realistic about the fact that the two of them might never have a future together. Eric seems to have some dark secrets of his past that make him close himself off emotionally, but I'm still not fully sure what made him be that way... hopefully we'll get a glimpse of his POV somewhere in the next part of the series.
What follows is an exhausting but beautiful game of back and forth, hot and cold, in which Katherine and Eric try to fight their attraction and their ever-growing connection to each other. And if that's not enough, then there's always Eric's ex from hell, Eliza, who sure doesn't make life any easier on them either.
“Why do you fight it?" I whisper.
"Because this is wrong. I lost my head for a moment. I'd blame the alcohol but that would be a lie.”
"You've captured me, Kitten."
Now, about the ending...
**Cliffhanger alert**
I already had a feeling things were going a bit too well, but I was not expecting the final chapter to end so dramatically... Still, it gave the story one hell of a twist and it made me all the more anxious for the sequel to come out.
All in all, Emerald Eyes was an emotional read filled with steamy scenes as well as sweet and funny ones that gave a more light-hearted feel to the story. There was quite a bit of angst towards the ending, but overall, the book didn't leave me with a truly sad feeling. It just left me curious and full of questions about what's going to happen next in Katherine and Eric's lives.
